The year was 1970, and a birth of a star spins into this earth keeping everyone indefinite, of the talent he is going to unleash through the corridor of time he is about to travel. He was born in a family, where commitment and dedication were the sacrosanct, and being in that environment, it became natural, to inculcate the disciple in him. This is Kumar Mukherjee; son of Smt. Suvra Mukherjee and Shri Kajal Mukherjee, a pioneer Footballer of his time – better known as George Best of India by his fans. With all his passion and dedication, he served India for 15 long years at various National and International levels.

In 1978, at the tender age of eight, Kumar started his musical exploration, being blessed by his first Guru
Pandit Shankar Ghosh, to start his “Avandyam Vidya” in Tabla. By 1980, Kumar discovered a soul connection while, practicing with his Guru, when he heard Smt. Sanjukta Ghosh, wife of Pandit Shankar Ghosh taking classical vocal classes at the same place. The mysticism of the “bhăv”, “răg”, and “tăn” attracted Kumar to start his “tălim” of Hindustani Classical Vocal under the guidance of Smt. Sanjukta Ghosh, the disciple of
Ustad Munawar Ali Khan Sahib and Pandit Prasun Banerjee.

By 1984, Kumar Mukherjee was already an evolved student, and was focused for higher objective. Though Kumar’s first conversation with Ustad Munawar Ali Khan Sahib happened in the year 1981; in 1984, he went to Delhi to become his disciple in traditional “guru – shishya parampară”, while, staying in the “guru – griha”, and learning treasures of “Kasur-Patiala Gharana”. It was pain-in-romance to conjure the mastery of the gharana through a tălim made of hardship, dedication, discipline, respect, and love. Following the sad demise of Kumar’s Guru, his son – the present Khalifa, Ustad Raza Ali Khan Sahib became Kumar’s guide to help retain the treasures of the Gharana that he earned from his Guru.

The pen-picture of the artist is a man of versatility. Retrograding to his childhood reminds us of Kumar’s school days and a robust educational base from La Martiniere for Boys, Calcutta. Further, he procured his M.A. in English from Jadavpur University, Calcutta, where he discovered his experimental faculty of mind. In time, this inspired and helped Kumar in his musical introspection as well.
